Every breath we take connects us to the world around us. On June 4, Canada celebrates Clean Air Day, a national occasion dedicated to raising awareness about air quality and the simple, meaningful actions we can take to protect the air we share.

A Brief History

Clean Air Day began in 1999 as part of Canada’s broader Environment Week initiative. Recognizing the vital importance of air quality to human health and the environment, the Government of Canada designated this day to highlight both the challenges and the opportunities in reducing air pollution.

What began as a small awareness effort has grown into a cross-country movement, embraced by schools, municipalities, businesses, and individuals alike. It’s now a key date in the calendar for those committed to building a healthier, more sustainable future.

Why Clean Air Matters

Poor air quality affects everyone, but it’s especially hazardous for children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions such as asthma. According to Health Canada, air pollution contributes to over 15,000 premature deaths each year in our country.

But air quality isn’t just a health issue—it’s an environmental one. Air pollutants harm ecosystems, accelerate climate change, and increase the risk of wildfires, which in turn release more harmful particles into the atmosphere.

The Workplace Connection

At RRSC, we recognize the connection between workplace environments and air quality. From ensuring adequate ventilation in office spaces to reducing emissions during daily operations, there’s a role for every employer and employee in supporting cleaner air.

Whether you're conducting ergonomic assessments, creating a hybrid work policy, or managing fleet and facility emissions, the choices we make professionally have a significant impact on our communities.

Your Call to Action

This Clean Air Day, we challenge you to make one small change that supports cleaner air. Here are a few ideas:

  • Leave the car at home – bike, walk, or use public transit if you’re able.

  • Work remotely – reduce commuting-related emissions.

  • Green your space – add air-purifying plants to your home or office.

  • Upgrade ventilation – review your HVAC systems for optimal air quality.

  • Educate your team – include clean air discussions in your next toolbox talk or wellness meeting.

Even one change—when done collectively—can make a measurable difference.

Let's Clear the Air, Together

Clean Air Day is more than a date on the calendar. It’s a reminder that the air we breathe is a shared resource, one that deserves our respect and protection. Let’s work together to create healthier homes, communities, and workplaces—one breath at a time.
